Norte Fire in San Clemente & San Juan Capistrano: A Community Comes Together
October 17, 2026 | Orange County Insights by Missy Sandefur
For those of us who call South Orange County home, seeing smoke rising over familiar neighborhoods is a powerful reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, the Norte Fire broke out near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente. Fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, the wildfire spread rapidly toward neighboring communities, including San Juan Capistrano.
Families faced evacuations, homes were impacted, and firefighters worked tirelessly to protect residents and property.
What Happened During the Norte Fire?
The Norte Fire began late Friday morning and quickly expanded as hot, dry conditions and strong winds challenged firefighting efforts.
By Saturday morning, October 17, officials reported that the fire had reached approximately 570 acres, with six homes damaged or destroyed.
Evacuation orders affected neighborhoods in both San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. Emergency personnel, firefighting aircraft, and ground crews responded to protect homes and help residents reach safety.
As firefighters continued their work, some evacuation restrictions began to ease. Residents were advised to check official evacuation maps before returning to affected areas.
The fire serves as an important reminder that wildfire preparedness matters throughout South Orange County, including our beautiful coastal communities.
Five Ways Orange County Residents Can Prepare for Wildfires
1. Know Your Evacuation Zone
Familiarize yourself with your neighborhood's evacuation zone and sign up for emergency notifications through AlertOC. Knowing where to find accurate information can save valuable time.
2. Prepare an Emergency Go-Bag
Keep essential medications, identification, important documents, water, emergency supplies, chargers, and pet necessities together in an accessible location.
3. Plan Multiple Evacuation Routes
Identify alternate ways to leave your neighborhood. During emergencies, roads may become congested or closed with little warning.
4. Keep Communication Devices Ready
Charge your phone, consider keeping a portable power bank available, and follow updates from local emergency officials rather than relying on unverified social media reports.
5. Look Out for Your Neighbors
Some residents, particularly seniors, individuals with mobility challenges, and families with pets, may need additional assistance preparing for an evacuation.
A little preparation and communication can make a meaningful difference.

Whether you live in San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, or another South Orange County community, I encourage you to take a few minutes to review your family's emergency preparedness plan.
A strong community isn't just about where we live. It's about how we look after one another.
